Ocean Rock Pools of Scotland

For our final project in Introduction to Typography, we were assigned by instructor Leila Singleton, to design a field guide handbook, within a theme of our choosing, illustrating three specimens within said category, using only type characters. No distortion of characters or hand drawn elements were allowed.

For this project I chose what could be found in the ocean rockpools of Scotland’s coast, narrowing it down to a Jellyfish, Hermit Crab, and Sea Anemone, with Seaweed as an accent. I designed them all fully in Adobe InDesign, using only type characters and a reference photo, and chose typefaces that reflected the different textures of the specimens, intending to maintain an illustrative nature over realism.

My hope is this field guide provokes curiosity to learn more about the ocean rockpools of Scotland, as they hold a world unto themselves.
